Safety Razor and Shaving Brush Stand

After a few months of reading articles and doing unkown amounts of research, I finally caved and bought myself all of the necessary equipment to begin shaving the way my grandfather shaved, the same way his father shaved, with a single blade safety razor, and old fashioned shaving soap.

This new equipment meant that I felt the need for a place to store it all in a neat and organized manner. To do this I flocked to the internet in search of an appropriate stand to hold my razor and shaving brush in the positions reccomended for optimal lifespan and performance. I wanted a stand that would hold both the razor and brush on the same stand, one that had a classy appearance, and most of all, was cost effective. I was unable to find such a stand that met all of my criteria, as well as my own extremely high standards.

I then began to visualize in my head what exactly I wanted. Although metal looks sharp and modern, I wanted something that would help better represent the history of the equipment I would be using. I decided that wood would be a good material to use. It is easy to work with, can be easily waterproofed, and is no doubt a classy looking material if used properly.

As my personal motto being, "simpler is better", I did not want to have too many odd curves or designs. I simply wanted something to do the job it was designed to do. Thus I drew a quick sketch of what I had in my head, one that is almost exactly the same as the final render you see above. The material used in the render is pine, a wood that I am all too familiar using.

The curves are all simple enough, they provide functionality as well as a bit of style to help make the design a bit more classy. The final render you see will be made of a wood that is yet to be determined, however a hard wood like oak is likely because of its distinctive grain and it's appearance after being finished with a clear polyurethane.

All in all the Solidworks modeling was relatively simple, and this project is expected to be more of a labor of love than anything else. While this design will win no awards, it will most definitely serve the purpose it is meant to, and it will hopefully be a piece that I show my children with pride as I teach them to shave the way their father had, the way their grandfather, and their great grandfather before him.
